Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers (LEADER) ’project

Overview of the project

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Leading Initiative for Excellent Young Researchers (LEADER) commenced in AY2016. The project aims to create stable and independent positions for excellent young researchers conducting research in brand new research areas and to show new career paths to young researchers who can succeed in research institutions run by industries, schools, or the government.

The requirements of LEADER are:

  • Researchers employed through a tenure track system or an equivalent system that is fair, transparent, and stable.
  • To be a young researcher who can create an independent research environment.
  • Research activities will constitute 50% or more of the researcher’s efforts.

Hokkaido University’s efforts related to LEADER

In AY2016, Hokkaido University launched two new systems that are a combination of the LEADER system and a tenure track system. One is a system in which an applicant is employed through direct negotiations that LEADER offers and then enters a system that is a combination of the LEADER system and the Hokkaido University Tenure Track System. The other is a system that combines the LEADER system and a tenure track system of a department of Hokkaido University. By actively using the LEADER system, Hokkaido University will foster and support young researchers.
